Why Swiss SME websites stay invisible to Google and AI

Tom
by Tom

Many Swiss SME websites are almost impossible for Google and AI assistants to find. Among the sites with the greatest need for work the SEO and content category averages only 3.6 out of 10. 85 percent score below 5. For 40 percent it is the weakest category of all. These sites often look tidy. They just tell neither a search engine nor an assistant what the business offers and where.

How we measured

At amai! we continuously review Swiss SME websites against a fixed grid. We placed 2292 sites on a five level maturity scale. For the 638 sites with the greatest need for work we added a score from 0 to 10 in eight categories, including SEO and content. The numbers therefore describe this weakest group and not the average of all SMEs. The rating is indicative and based on visible website elements. All the detail is in the SME website study.

The numbers

The category asks one question: can a search engine or an assistant understand what this business offers, for whom and where? Across the 638 sites the result looks like this:

  • Average 3.6 out of 10. The lowest value of all eight categories.
  • 85 percent below 5 points. Only 15 percent reach 5 or more.
  • Half at 3 or lower. That is no longer a cosmetic gap.
  • 40 percent: weakest category. For two sites in five nothing is as weak as findability.
Bar chart of the eight categories from 0 to 10, SEO and content lowest at 3.6.

For comparison, positioning sits at 4.8 in the same group and conversion at 4.0. So the sites look reasonably kept. They are still rarely found.

What is missing on these sites

A page title with service and place. On at least 29 percent of the sites the title is generic or incomplete. If only the company name is in the title, Google cannot tell whether it is a joinery in Aarau or an accounting firm in Thun.

A meta description. On at least 28 percent it is missing or empty. It is the text under the search result. Without it Google picks a random snippet.

Text that explains. Most often missing are two sentences saying what is offered, for whom and why this business. Many sites consist of images and buzzwords. An assistant has nothing to quote from them.

A preview image for shared links. On at least 35 percent the og:image is missing. That does not hurt ranking directly. It does cost clicks as soon as someone shares the link on WhatsApp or LinkedIn.

What this means for AI answers

More and more people ask an assistant instead of a search engine. These assistants read websites and summarise them. They recommend what can be placed clearly. A site without a clear statement of service and place simply has no chance there. Whoever is readable for Google has already done half the work. The rest is explained under GEO for Swiss SMEs.

Five fixes for more visibility

  1. Service and place in the page title. For example "Joinery in Aarau" instead of only the company name.
  2. A meta description for every important page. Two clear sentences that invite the click.
  3. Two sentences on the homepage. What you offer, for whom and why you. Right under the main heading.
  4. One page per service. One topic per page with its own title and its own text. That way each page can be found on its own.
  5. Answer questions. A short FAQ with the questions customers really ask. AI assistants like to read exactly this form.

None of these points needs a redesign. They need a few hours and clear sentences.

Frequently asked questions

What does SEO and content mean for an SME website? The category measures whether search engines and assistants understand what a business offers. It covers the page title, the meta description and text that explains the service, the audience and the place.

How weak are Swiss SME websites on SEO and content? Among the 638 sites with the greatest need for work the average is 3.6 out of 10. 85 percent score below 5. For 40 percent it is the weakest category.

Can AI assistants recommend my website? Yes if the site says clearly what you offer and where. Assistants read and summarise text. Without a clear statement there is nothing to recommend.

How quickly can visibility improve? The basics take a few hours: page title, meta description and two clear sentences on the homepage. It then often takes a few weeks before Google and assistants pick it up.
